Educationist slams Taraba's plan to relocate tertiary schools

Published by Guardian on Wed, 05 Oct 2011

THE Taraba State government's plan to relocate three of its tertiary institutions without abrogating the law, which established them, has continued to elicit criticisms. While the state polytechnic is to be relocated from Wukari Local Government council to Suntai village where Governor Danbaba Suntai hails from, the School of Health Technology in Takum is to be relocated to Karim-Lamido Local Government Council where the deputy governor comes from. The College of Agriculture, which was established in 1976, is to be relocated from Jalingo, the state capital, to Gembu in Sardauna Local Government council, the SSG's home town.Gabriel Yaro, an educationist, condemned the plan, saying: 'Those behind the relocations have deliberately refused to listen to the voice of reason which will prevent uprisings.'That is why many of us believe that our governor lacks programmes and vision for the people. Have they taken into consideration the cost implications of moving these institutions' It is very sad that those in position that ought to tell him the truth are even the ones singing his praises.'To douse the tension which the relocations have ignited, the government has dropped its earlier plan to relocate the School of Health Technology. The Commissioner of Health, Prince Mustapha Hamman Gabdo, confirmed this to journalists. He said the process to abrogate the law in order to allow for the speedy relocations of the institution would soon be carried out by the members of the House of Assembly.
