He betrayed me; now his family wants me dead!

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

Dear Readers,To some of us, life comes in black and white. But for the very first time our writer realised that, there could be a list of shades to life after the man she loved and trusted stabbed her in the back, and left her in the cold. What can she do Fight for what belongs to her or resign to fatePlease, advise her, Monica Taiwo.Dear Taiwo,LIFE indeed is full of ironies. Who would have thought someone like me, a see-no-evil, hear-no-evil person, could face this type of music I am dancing to now.I lost my parents when I was a kid but my uncle and his wife who raised me up were people with the fear of God and they raised me then. They taught me to always be truthful, fair and see things the way they are. I have always used and depended on these principles and they had worked for me until I realised my husbands betrayal. He did not stab my back, but he looked at me straight in the face and stabbed my heart. His betrayal made me realised that there are so many sides to this world. I met Gabriel at a singles programme organised by a friends church about 12 years ago. We jelled immediately we were introduced to each other and three years later we were married. Our union was a happy one Gabriel was a loving husband and a devout Christian, even when his family wanted to oppose our relationship at the initial stage, he stood his ground and followed his heart. His mother excuse then was the fact that we were not from the same town, Gabriel is Yoruba while I am Edo.To the glory of God, his family members were unable to stop us and the early years of our union was a very happy one. As the Lord would have it, I had to wait seven years before I was blessed with the fruit of the womb. Gabriel was a man with the fear of God in him, he was not worried about our state of childlessness.Several times his mother would come to the house and call me names. Fortunately, for me, Gabriel  married me as a virgin. He did not mince words to let his mother and his people know this.I always saw him as a husband who was made in heaven. He gave me no cause to worry at all. While I was still waiting, my uncle who was the only surviving relative I knew died. Leaving me and his only son with enough wealth for us. We were raised as one, so we had no cause for alarm or worries. At about the time of his death, Gabriel had problems with the bank he  was working with  and he was laid off with some others. What my uncle left for me, came at the right time. It saved the situation, with the money and my cousins connections, my husband started his business, the Lord blessed him and he flourished, I never knew that his wealth and blessings would lead him to his sins. All these happened when our marriage was three years, I never knew that Gabriel took another wife and raised another family.Seven years after my marriage, the Lord visited me, like the mighty man in battle. He did not only visit me, he blessed me with a set of twins; two boys.As expected, everyone rejoiced with me. And two years after my boys, came another set of twins, this time two girls. God gives His own gifts without adding any sorrows.I never knew that Gabriels  wife lost one of her daughters the year I had my first set of  twins and when my second set of twins celebrated their first birthday, he lost another daughter. I really did not know what happened, their mother became so sick that she spent over six months on the hospital bed.On the day she was discharged from the hospital, instead of taking her home, she was brought over to my home, in the company of Gabriels mum and some of their relatives.I could still remember very well, it was on a Sunday evening. Gabriel did not attend the service with us, he said he had to go somewhere. I didnt see anything wrong in this, so, I did not    bother to ask him questions, so when they came in, his uncle did the introduction. He introduced the frail sick-looking woman as Gabriels wife and daughter. The little girl should be about five years old. A close look at her showed a big resemblance between her and my twin daughters. I was shocked at the introduction. I looked at Gabriel and expected him to defend what his uncle had just said but the look on his face affirmed it.As if that was not enough, they came to warn me that this woman and her surviving daughter must not die the way her other kids died. I learnt her first daughter died when I gave birth to my first set of twins and the second, when my twin daughters turned one. She also fell ill. They believed I was responsible for all these. As if that was not enough, Gabriel said she would stay in our house until she was well enough to go back to her own house. I was short of words. Could this be my own husband He had no explanation for his behaviour, he even gave me an option to leave if  I could not accommodate his wife. To borrow his mothers words, at least, this woman bore Gabriel children before I did and she is entittled to everything that is his own.I was warned not to use my juju to kill her. Please Monica Taiwo, help me, how do I  handle thisTheresa, Lagos.
