Quadri spearheads rout of Sporting in Portuguese League

Published by Guardian on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

NIGERIA'S Aruna Quadri matched his pre-match boasts with action when the All Africa Games bronze medallist led his team's 4-1 rout of Sporting Club in the Portuguese table tennis Super League. The Nigeria Civil Defense Corps officer, who plies his trade with GDSR Os Toledos, started the onslaught against Porto-based team with a convincing 3-1 win over China-born Zheng Shun. But Sas Lasan narrowly lost what would have been a 2-0 lead for Quadri's team when he fell 2-3 to Andrea Silva.Quadri's team-mate, Diogo Silva, restored the lead when he beat Ricardo Oliveira 3-1 to put the encounter at 2-1 in favour of GDSR. Quadri paired Silva in the doubles against Shun and Silva. The tension-soaked doubles nearly put the encounter at 2-2 but Quadri's never-say-die Nigerian spirit aided his team, which ended the doubles 3-2 for a 3-1 overall lead.Being the arrowhead of the team, the responsibility of stopping the visitors fell on Quadri and it turned out to be the toughest for the 23-year old against Silva. Despite Silva's spirited efforts to stretch the encounter for the day, Quadri put the match beyond the visitors as he won the game 3-2 to give his team a 4-1 win over Sporting Club. With this victory, his team maintains lead in the Portuguese elite league with nine points from three matches while his unbeaten record stretches to five matches. Quadri told journalists from his base in Portugal yesterday that he was happy leading his team's revenge against Sporting.'Despite this win, Imust admit that we still have a lot of work to doif we must win the league title again. I gave Sporting a lot of problem again, like I did last season when I alsowon two singles matches against them and a double during my first season with Associacao Recreaviva Novelense.
