Opebi residents task govt on drainage cleaning

Published by Tribune on Wed, 26 Oct 2011

Motorists and residents of Opebi area of Ikeja, Lagos State, have called on the state government to clear the channels in the area to ensure free flow of water, especially whenever it rains. Some residents lamented that they usually went through hell whenever it rained, as the water channels in the area had been blocked, causing flood to residential houses during rainy season.A business woman in one of the shopping malls in the area, Mrs Alice Umeh, lamented that she could not go out last Wednesday because of the flood that took over the Opebi road.'It is a usual problem for us here. We have been complaining to the officials of Opebi/Onigbongbo Development Council Area about the menace of flooding. They usually come once in a while to clear the drainages, but the approach is not effective.'Part of the problems is that whenever they clear the gutter, they always leave the debris and this debris will still have its way back into the gutter and that is the problem. I would advise that they make sure that the debris are removed immediately it is cleared from the gutter. If the gutters and water channels are cleared, the problem of flooding would be reduced'.Another residents, Alhaji Bayo Aina, told Community News that the government should help the residents create more drainages to ease the problem of flooding.'I think the government needs to create more drainages and water channels for free flow of water. It is giving us problems, as we always find it difficult to go home or come out whenever it rains.
