PDP, ACN, CNPP back Jonathan, CJN on special courts

Published by Punch on Sun, 06 Nov 2011

MEMBERSof the Peoples Democratic Party, Action Congress of Nigeria and Conference of Nigerian Political Parties in Kwara State have expressed support for President Goodluck Jonathan and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Dahiru Musdapher on the establishment of special courts to handle corruption cases. In separate telephone interviews with our correspondent, the PDP, ACN and CNPP said the establishment of the special courts was a welcome development. They added that it would fast-track prosecution and justice delivery on graft matters. The states PDP Secretary, Mr. Yemi Afolanya, said it would sanitise the political class and instill confidence in the masses on Jonathans resolve to fight corruption. He said, Justice delayed is justice denied and if the President in collaboration with the CJN is determined to fight corruption to a standstill, the first thing is to ensure that some indicted people are made to face the law and judgement is given. It is the right thing to do so that Nigerians will have hope. The ACN chairman in the state, Mr. Kayode Olawepo, said the special courts would speed up prosecution and trial of corruption-related cases and assist the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in its anti-graft drive. He said, I fully support it. It will help fast-track judicial process on graft matters, especially if we do not follow the conventional judicial process. When they were following the normal judicial process on election petitions, such cases at the tribunal took two or more years to be dispensed of.Now that we have special rules and procedures for election matters, it is faster. It will be very good if we can have such an arrangement for corruption related cases.Similarly, the state Caretaker Committee Chairman, CNPP, Mr. Lekan Alabi, said it was a commendable innovation that would reduce delays in the trials of public officials accused of corruption.Alabi said, It is super. It is a novel innovation. It will reduce the delay that we have in our conventional courts and speed up the trials of corrupt government officials.
