School slaughters 100 cows for Eid charity

As part of its humanitarian activities to mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, a school, Nigerian Turkish International College, on Sunday slaughtered 100 cows for distribution to indigent residents of Lagos State.Principal of the school, located on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Mr. Fatih Keskin, told our correspondent that the school slaughtered 800 cows during last years Sallah."We have undertaken various humanitarian programmes since the inception of the school in 2000. We have other branches in Kano, Kaduna, Abuja and Yobe. They are all doing the same thing we are doing right now," Keskin said.According to the principal, the school is under the control of the First Surat of Companies Nigeria Limited, which financed the humanitarian programmes through funds sourced from the Turkish community in the country.Explaining how the distribution of the meat was undertaken, the Vice-Principal of the school, Mr. Olayinka Aderoju, said the needy were the main beneficiaries of the programme.He said, "We distribute the meat in different parts of Lagos so that people who do not have the financial wherewithal to buy what they want during the celebration will equally have a good time with their families.Apart from individuals, we distribute the meat to people on the streets; we take some of the meat to hospitals, prisons, mosques, churches and charity homes."Aderoju said the company undertook the programme in order to contribute its part to the society and make its presence felt by the people of the state.He said since the companys establishment, it had sponsored other programmes like distribution of educational materials to residents of Lagos and Ogun states.The vice-principal said, "During festive periods like this, many indigent people usually resign to fate. We strongly feel that they, like other Nigerians, deserve to be catered for."On the Ramadan months of every year, the company undertake the feeding of more than 50,000 fasting Muslims and the Sallah meat we are distributing to indigent people today is to people of all faiths." The school was beseiged by residents of Lagos and those of the communities along the expressway, who came to get meat.Obviously thankful for the gesture, some of those who came to the school said they were looking forward to next years Sallah because of the programme."They gave meat to whoever came without asking questions. I am very happy to be here because I got more meat than my family could eat for the celebration," a beneficiary, Saliu Ibrahim, told our correspondent.
