NNL takes Super Cup to Bauchi

Published by Tribune on Sat, 12 Nov 2011

SIGNS that things would soon be looking up for good the Nigerian National League (NNL) have started emerging as the new board of the league yesterday unfolded plans to stage its Super League in Bauchi next week. The Super Cup which is billed to run from November 16-20 will involve the quartet of Wikki Tourists, Jigawa Golden Stars, Akwa United and Rising Stars of Akure. The four clubs had during the regular season played themselves back to the elite division. While Wikki and Jigawa got promotion from group A, Akwa and Rising Stars emerged from group B to set the stage for the Bauchi Super Cup which is being bankrolled by Bauchi state government.Chairman of NNL board, Chief Emeka Inyama stated yesterday that the Super Cup would mark the beginning of good things to come for the national league. Inyama disclosed that the five- day soccer fiesta in Bauchi will commence with an opening ceremony which all Nigerian football stakeholders will be proud of at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa stadium on the 17th.In his words:'Teams are expected to arrive Bauchi on the 16th and the events proper will start on the 17th with the first game and opening ceremony that would be full of razzmatazz and effect. We will observe a rest day on the 18th to enable the league board hold its inaugural meeting. The final match will come up on the 20th.The winners and runners up of the Super Cup will smile home with a mouth watering prize money and to encourage the players to excel, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) will smile to the bank with a princely sum.'Inyama stressed that his board intends to make the Bauchi outing a media event in line with FIFA's concept for football competitions, even as he charged the media to partner with the board in its task of raising the bar as far as the national league is concerned.'My appeal is for the media to partner with us because we cant go it all alone in the task of trying to turn things around in the league. We intend to make the Bauchi Super Cup a media event and we going to use the competition to unveil our new logo, website and in fact the new face of the national league.
