Nestle Milo Under-13 football championship kicks off

Published by Guardian on Tue, 15 Nov 2011

THE Nestle Milo U-13 Football Championship is set to commence at the 4th National School Sports Festival, which started yesterday and will run till November 24.The competition in Cross River State will produce the Nigerian representative for the Africa championship, holding in Accra, Ghana from April 9 to 14, 2012 in the U-13 category. The African football championship is expected to be bigger than the first edition of the MILO U-13 football championship, which took place in South Africa last year.Asegun Secondary School, Ibadan was the Nigerian flag bearers in South Africa and they won the coveted African trophy.'The competition, which is open to every child between ages 9 and 13, is intended primarily to cultivate young football talents in Nigeria. It is also designed to provide a platform for future football champions to actualize their dreams of pursuing professional football,' the organisers said in a press statement.According to the statement, 'In this year's edition, Nestl Milo will empower the children with knowledge about the importance of positive values such as teamwork, confidence, discipline and determination in actualizing their dreams. They will also be empowered with knowledge on the nutrition and healthy lifestyles they need to adopt as future sports champions.'Once again, Nestle Milo demonstrates its consistent support of grassroots sports development by investing in the development of Nigeria's rich pool of talented football players from an early age. It will be recalled that the brand recently concluded the MILO Football Clinic which was also aimed at achieving these objectives. It is hoped that Nigeria's future football players in the National U-14 and U-17 teams will come from innovative initiatives such as this.
