The richest casino players: how they became millionaires and how much they won

Published by Punch on Fri, 12 Aug 2022

Almost all players, when they enter a casino, dream of walking out as millionaires. However, what few people know is that winning isnt just based on pure luck. After all, winning at land-based or online casinos requires a lot of gaming experience and knowledge.

For gambling experts, winning at casinos was not just a dream or a fluke, but a reality that they achieved by turning a few dollars into millions. BestAuCasinosOnline tells the story of those who made their fortune in casinos and made it to the list of the worlds richest players.

Bill Benter — Million Dollar Gambler

Bill Benter is an American and Hong Kong-based professional gambler and philanthropist.

The future billionaire studied physics in university and is famous as a mathematical genius. After obtaining his science degree, he decided to use his knowledge to count cards at blackjack tables. After years of practice, Benter became an accomplished player and excelled at blackjack. By counting cards, he almost always won and made several million. Because of this, he was banned from entering most Las Vegas casinos.

Bill moved to Hong Kong. There he started working on a formula to help predict the outcome of races. This is how the world saw the first gambling software to support gambling, as well as his algorithm for predicting winnings on horse races. This software is still considered to be the most successful to this day.

It is rumoured that Bill Benter earns $100 million a year. And one day of racing can earn him anywhere from $5 million to $10 million, making him the richest gambler in the world.

Edward Thorpe - father of the card game

Edward Thorpe is a mathematics professor, inventor, bestselling author, hedge-fund manager and gambler.

Born into a poor family struggling to survive at all costs, Edward Thorpe studied hard to get out of poverty. His efforts were not in vain — in 1958 he received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of California. As a mathematics professor with a masters degree in physics, Thorpe had above-average intelligence.

He applied his mathematical skills to casinos and started making huge profits. And while Bill Benter was famous for counting cards, it was Edward Thorpe who is considered to be the father of the method. He invented the original system and later used it in real-life situations. In 1962, Edward wrote Beat The Dealer, a book which proved mathematically that you can beat casinos at blackjack by counting cards. Other books followed, but this one became a New York Times bestseller and the first of its kind, and is still considered to be the main reference in this popular blackjack strategy and inspires many players to win.

Thorpe went further and invented a handheld computer that could be carried around in the casino. He developed card-counting software using an IBM 704 to improve players odds. This technology was used for more than 20 years but was banned in 1985. He also developed the Thorpe counting method for backgammon and baccarat. Edward Thorpe is a member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame.

Edward eventually applied his intellect to the stock market, which helped him become rich in securities and hedge funds.

Željko Ranogajec - The Joker in the world of gambling

Zeljko studied banking, finance and tax law and had great hopes in mathematics. However, he gave up higher education and replaced it with a rich and regal life of professional gambling.

With a photographic memory and an excellent grasp of mathematics, Ranogajec began making large sums of money — he could quickly turn a $100 bet into a seven-figure winnings. Thanks to his style and determination, Željko made millions in casino profits. He succeeded to such an extent that casinos across Australia banned him from playing.
This forced Željko to consider other types of games — mainly keno and horse racing — where he continued to use his mathematical skills to predict his winnings.

Ranogajec is one of the richest players ever to appear in the casino world, but he has never been a man of fame and rarely gives interviews.

Phil Ivey — the American Legend

This American has been regarded as the best and most successful gambler in the world for a number of years. He confirmed this status, earning $11 million on a mini-baccarat in one of the casinos in England. Ivey has made a name for himself in the World Series of Poker, earning an impressive nine bracelets there.

The professional player paid a visit to the Crockfords Casino in England and made a million pound initial deposit. The celebrity was immediately escorted to a separate VIP lounge where Phil spent several evenings playing. He was served by his personal dealer and manager. In total, Ivey spent seven hours at the cards, managing to increase his deposit 7 times! In this case, the first night the player went into deficit for nearly 500 thousand, but then received permission to increase the limit of bets and went up sharply. Ivey stopped when he earned $11.5 million.

The casino initially refused to pay him that amount, deciding to check the circumstances thoroughly. Ivy was promised to pay the money within two days. The cameras, however, showed that no fraud was recorded. And the dealer said that the player did not touch the cards himself, they were handed over exclusively by an employee of the establishment. So far, Ivey has got his deposit back but the casino will have to pay up or his reputation will suffer. Ivey also gambles quite often in Las Vegas, at the Bellagio Casino. In February 2006, he played one-on-one against a millionaire gambler and managed to win $16 million.

These players have proven that with the right set of skills, knowledge of mathematics, determination and focus, there are high chances of winning. If their stories are inspiring, perhaps youll be next on this elite list. You can start with a crypto on a mobile casino.
