A rare 5 note printed last year is selling for more than 60,000 on eBay

Published by Business Insider on Sun, 12 Mar 2017

LONDON ' A polymer 5 note with a "rare" serial number is set to be sold on eBay for more than 60,000.The note ' one of the Royal Mint's 440 million new fivers released in September ' has the serial code AA01 444444.The first four characters indicate it is from the very first batch, many of which were sold by the Bank of England in a charity auction in October.Currency collectors have been paying vast sums to get their hands on the notes with the lowest serial numbers in the hope they will be worth much more in the future.Keen bidders have just hours left to win this particular note, which stood at 60,100 at 10am.There have been 136 bids on it in total. The 5 notes, made from a type of plastic, were introduced in a bid to prevent counterfeiting.Four of them were engraved with a tiny image of Jane Austen by specialist micro-engraver Graham Short and then put back into circulation.Only two of the four incredibly rare notes, believed to be worth tens of thousands of pounds, are believed to have been found so far.The old 5 notes featuring Elizabeth Fry will stop being legal tender on May 5.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: The new 12-sided 1 coin will be the most secure coin in the world
