Gunmen spoil sallah celebration for Meiran residents

It was supposed to be fun and merriment galore last Sunday when Muslims all over the world marked the end of 30 days fasting, but for some residents of Meiran in Agbado-Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, reverse was the case. It was a day some gunmen decided to pay them an unwanted visit.Community News gathered that about 10 gunmen stormed the area in the early hours of Saturday on a house-to-house raiding and 12 residents fell victims as they lost valuables ranging from cash, handsets to jewellery and other items to the night marauders.Security situation in the area has been of serious concern to the residents of the community and its environs. About two months ago, unknown gunmen had killed a guard, employed by the community to beef up security in the area. The man was killed by armed men when he challenged them.The death of the guard was painful to the community as the man wasregarded as fearless and dedicated to duty.The last Saturday raid, Community News learnt, caught the residents unawares as everybody was busy preparing for sallah celebration.One of the victims of the raid who sought anonymity, appealed to the Lagos State Police Command to beef up security in the area so that residents can have peace of mind . 'The present situation whereby people sleep with two eyes open does not urgur well. The most annoying aspect of the problem is that these gunmen often carried out the raid unchallenged.'Our guard was killed recently by armed men who were trying to escape after snatching some cars. The man challenged them and he was killed in the process."He said that the major problem facing the people now was how to sleep with their two eyes closed.
